Arrival

Arrival on foot along the Way of St James

The St Beatus Caves are located directly on the Way of St James. The walk from Merligen to the entrance of the caves takes about 75-90 minutes, from the Beatenbucht landing stage along the the Way of St James uphill about 60-70 minutes.
 

Arrival by bike

Arriving by e-bike or mountain bike, for example along the cycle route around Lake Thun, is particularly attractive in good weather. There are plenty of bicycle parking spaces right outside the entrance.
 

Arrival by car

For individual travellers, there are paid car parks nearby.

It is a 1-2 minute walk to the Cave Museum & Beatus Shop and 8-10 minute to the cave entrance.
 

Arrival by public transport

The STI bus stop 'Beatushöhlen' is a few metres from the entrance to the Cave Museum & Beatus Shop.

From the BLS pier 'Beatushöhlen-Sundlauenen', the ascent to the cave entrance takes about 20-25 minutes.

Useful Information

Prams & wheelchairs: Access is not barrier-free

Neither the path nor the caves are accessible for wheelchair users or disabled persons. For safety reasons, we cannot allow prams or wheelchairs.
 

Clothing & Footwear

In the St Beatus Caves, the temperature is a constant 8-10 degrees with a relative humidity of about 95 % during all year round and the paths and steps are damp. Appropriate clothing and good footwear are therefore recommended.


Consumption inside the caves

We protect the caves from all environmental influences and potential pollution. Therefore, smoking, eating and drinking are prohibited inside the caves.

After the tour you are welcome to visit the Restaurant "Stein & Sein".


Photographing in the caves

We are happy for you to take photographs in the caves with consideration for other visitors. However, tripods are not allowed, and we ask that you leave them at the ticket office.
